About Richard Fortman

Basic Checkers Reissue

Welcome to Checkers2010.info, the official website of the 2010 American Checker Federation National Tournament. The tournament will run from August 1-5, 2010, at the Days Inn in Springfield, Illinois, USA. Springfield was the home of the late Richard L. Fortman, a grandmaster player, keen analyst, prolific checkers author, and generous mentor, and this tournament is being held in his honor and memory. This will be a three-move tournament, fittingly so given that Fortman's book Basic Checkers did more to advance three-move checkers than any other single volume. Even though top analysts, often assisted by computer analysis, have improved on some of Fortman's play over the years, BC remains both a monumental achievement and the starting point for any serious study of tournament checkers. We are proud to honor Richard Fortman with this tournament, and hope you will join us next August!
